Curry & Paxton was born in London in 1876 at 195 Great Portland St., and originally christened Pickard & Curry (after parents Joseph Fidoe Pickard and William Curry). At 12 years of age, following Mr Pickard’s retirement, the company was given a new guardian, George Paxton. In 1920, the business was officially renamed as Curry & Paxton, and we commemorate this centenary by examining the London roots of some of the faces recently seen in the company’s products.
Michael Caine wearing "Yvan" frames in The Ipcress File (1965)
Sir Michael Caine was born Maurice Joseph Micklewhite Jr. at St. Olave’s hospital in Rotherhithe, a former dockland area of south-east London. His father, Maurice Sr., was a fish market porter of English and Irish heritage, while his London-born mother Ellen was a cook and charwoman. In 1953, at the age of 20, Caine began his acting career and has appeared in more than 130 films – the most memorable for us are, of course, the Harry Palmer trilogy and The Italian Job, in which he wears Curry & Paxton spectacles and sunglasses.
Marina Hambro wearing "Faye" sunglasses in The Getaway (2020)
Marina Hambro was born at St Thomas’ hospital in central London, located across the River Thames from the Houses of Parliament, and describes her family as “very English”. Her grandmother was keen on horseracing, and Marina believes this may have influenced her own love of the equine world – leading her to leave school and start work as a wrangler at a ranch in Philipsburg, Montana. Having spent sufficient time in the saddle, Marina returned to London and enrolled at drama school. She kindly took a break in her current acting career to take the reins of the Jaguar XK140 roadster which she takes for a ride in the recently shot Curry & Paxton short film, “The Getaway”.
James Jonathan Turner wearing "Freddie" sunglasses in The Getaway (2020)
James Jonathan Turner was born at Mile End hospital in London’s East End and, given that the location is historically“within earshot of Bow bells”, he proudly considers himself to be a true cockney… just like the previous generations of men in his family. James speaks fondly of his great grandfather who was a red beret and Dunkirk veteran – which led him to consider following his footsteps into a military career. However, James subsequently looked to his grandfather, who ran a motor repair business in Dalston, and decided to become a mechanic – which was suitably aligned with his passion for motorcycles. We thankfully managed to coax James off two wheels and install him in the passenger seat of the four-wheeled Jaguar for “The Getaway” video alongside Marina Hambro.
Louisa Karayiannis wearing "Charlie" frames for Curry & Paxton photoshoot
Louisa Karayiannis was born in the south-west London district of Putney to a second-generation Greek Cypriot family. Louisa is currently studying filmmaking at university, and we are grateful that she was able to step onto the other side of the camera for a recent Curry & Paxton photoshoot – from which several images of her have appeared in the September edition of Vogue magazine. She has now returned to the production of a short film about her sister, which features both an all-female cast and crew. We hope that Louisa will be as pleased with the result of her film as we are with the wonderful shots we have of her in Curry & Paxton eyewear.
Dillon Kirk Boakye wearing "Ronnie" frames for Curry & Paxton photoshoot
Dillon Kirk Boakye was born at Whittington hospital in north London. His mother moved to London from Ghana at the age of 18, and his father, also of Ghanaian descent, was born in Germany. At a young age, Dillon showed serious athletic prowess, excelling at football, rugby and mixed martial arts. He remained connected to the sports world by starting work as a physical training instructor, which eventually led to the position of PE Teacher at St. Mary’s school in Hornsey – an inner suburb of north London. Unfortunately, redundancy forced him to reconsider his career path and, following his mother’s sound advice to “get a trade”, he began training as a gas engineer. However, his good looks and impressive physique have not gone unnoticed and he was recently recommended to a model agency. We are delighted that the latest Curry & Paxton photoshoot was able to provide one of his first assignments.
